In the 1930s, plans were made to build the ornate stone entrance. Six-hundred-and-eight-man hours went into building the entrance. Then the intricate iron gate was constructed. The grounds were surveyed by Jefferson County preparation for the concreting of the rock driveway from the gate to the top of the hill. The driveway is 850 feet long and eight feet wide and took one week to finish.
The stone gate entrance is now synonymous with Sokol Camp and is there to greet us as we turn into the driveway to come out to Camp. Many a Sokol Camper can remember doing their morning calisthenics and then making the trek down the driveway to “touch the gate” before running back up the hill for breakfast in what is now a daily tradition during Camping.
