While serving as a focal point at the top of the driveway, the Rock Garden was constructed to combat a severe water wash problem sending mud and debris toward the Lodge. The original project took three years to complete and included several elaborate elements including a water feature and wooden structures.
Made of porous rocks cemented against the hillside with pipe bracing for reinforcements created a cave that could be walked through and a lookout point at the top.
The cave would be filled in with concrete in the 2000’s for fear of the pipes rusting and causing a collapse. Members came together over a couple of weekends to fill the opening and seal the entrances.
In addition to filling in the cave, a major fundraising effort in 2010 is commemorated with the paver walkway at the base on the Rock Garden Terrace.
